Bangkok's second largest airport to introduce pat-down checks from Nov 1

Don Mueang International Airport in Thailand's Bangkok will replace handheld metal-detector checks with manual pat-down searches from Nov. 1, potentially extending security screening times for departing passengers.

The airport announced the change on Oct. 27, saying passengers would undergo pat-down checks after passing walk-through metal detectors or body scanners, The Nation Thailand reported.

The revised procedure aims to strengthen aviation security and align airport screening with Regulation No. 113 of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand and recommendations from the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Thai aviation authorities recognize walk-through metal detectors, body scanners and pat-down searches as methods of passenger security screening.

Don Mueang, Bangkok's second largest airport after Suvarnabhumi Airport, warned that the new procedure could lengthen security checks, especially during peak travel periods, Khaosod English news site reported.

The airport said searches would be conducted appropriately while respecting passengers' rights.

To help reduce delays, travelers are advised to remove metal items while queuing and prepare their belongings before reaching security checkpoints. They should also notify security staff in advance of any physical limitations or conditions that could affect screening, such as injuries, implanted medical devices or pregnancy.

CAAT recommends preparing items that may require separate screening, including jackets, belts, watches, mobile phones and footwear.
