Michael Jordan's autographed jersey from Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals has shattered records, selling for US$14 million in a private transaction to become the most expensive piece of basketball memorabilia ever purchased.

Hunt Auctions announced on Monday that the game-worn Chicago Bulls jersey was purchased by Miami real estate investor Ron Firman.

According to the auction house, the staggering price tag not only sets a basketball record but also ranks as the second-largest sale in history among game-worn sports jerseys.

The current all-time record belongs to the New York Yankees jersey worn by Babe Ruth when he famously called his shot ahead of a home run during Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, which sold for $24.12 million in 2024.

Jordan wore the jersey on June 5, 1998, in Salt Lake City as Chicago faced a deficit against the Utah Jazz. Delivering a dominant performance, Jordan tallied 37 points, five rebounds, and three assists in a 93-88 victory that tied the series at 1-1.

The Bulls ultimately defeated the Jazz in six games to secure the 1998 championship, marking the sixth and final title of Jordan's legendary career. Nine days later, he collected his sixth Finals MVP award, putting him two ahead of anyone else in NBA history. This historic 1997-98 season was later immortalized in the 2020 documentary series "Last Dance".

"The record-setting price achieved for the related Michael Jordan jersey is yet another corroborative result as to the significance of Jordan within the industry and popular culture," David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, said in a statement.

Hunt described the jersey as a "remarkable garment that bore witness to one of Jordan's most hallowed NBA Finals appearances" during his final season.

"While Michael Jordan's importance within the sports memorabilia marketplace has long been established, it has now escalated to an elite asset class more typically reserved for iconic works of art," he added. We are very pleased to have been able to facilitate this historic sale, which serves as another benchmark for our industry."

Last month, the home jersey worn by Jordan in Game 3 of the same 1998 Finals sold at auction for $12.26 million.
