Two foreign tourists have been arrested for allegedly stealing bank cards from passengers' bags in overhead compartments on a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore.
The duo, aged 54 and 59, were arrested at Changi Airport Terminal 4 on Oct. 12 during an operation targeting thefts aboard aircraft, Channel News Asia reported citing a source of police on Tuesday.
Officers found three bank cards that did not belong to the men, police added.
Investigations revealed that each suspect had allegedly stolen bank cards from a different passenger’s bag during the flight, AsiaOne reported.
Both victims had stored their bags in overhead compartments and only discovered the missing cards after leaving the aircraft, according to police.
If convicted, the thieves could face up to three years in jail, a fine, or both under Singapore law.
Police advised air passengers to keep cash and valuables with them rather than leave them in bags stored in overhead compartments.
Travelers were also urged to watch for anyone opening overhead compartments or rummaging through other passengers’ bags during flights, and to alert cabin crew if they notice suspicious behaviour.
