Left-back Calvin Verdonk has made history as the first player from Indonesia and Southeast Asia to make an appearance in the UEFA Champions League.
The milestone came in the 76th minute of the league phase clash between Lille and Arsenal on Tuesday night when the 29-year-old Verdonk came off the bench to replace Romain Perraud. Although Lille were already trailing by three goals and struggling against the hosts, Verdonk's appearance was historic for Southeast Asian football.
During his remaining time on the pitch, Verdonk showed great tenacity to support the backline. He posted impressive defensive statistics, recording 16 touches, three successful tackles, and winning three out of four physical duels. His resilience helped Lille avoid conceding further goals under Arsenal's immense pressure. With limited time to make an impact, he received a 6.2 rating from FotMob.
Arsenal secured a commanding 3-0 victory, with Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze, and Bukayo Saka all finding the back of the net from the 64th to 71st minutes. The defeat leaves Lille in a difficult position early in the tournament, as they have now lost both of their opening matches, following a 2-3 defeat to Real Betis.
Verdonk, who was born in the Netherlands and previously represented the U17 team there, officially became an Indonesian citizen in April 2024. Since making his debut, he has quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the Indonesia national team, with the peak being the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup title following a thrilling final victory over Thailand on Oct. 5.
