Japanese teenager Sora Matsushima has made history by rising to world number one in men's table tennis, ending China's long-standing dominance and becoming the youngest player to ever top the singles rankings.

Matsushima officially claimed the top spot in the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) men's singles rankings in October 2026 following his successful campaign at the China Smash.

The 19-year-old phenomenon not only surpassed his rivals but also established a commanding lead in the standings, positioning himself to hold the top position through the end of the year.

According to the rankings released on Monday, Matsushima leads the field with 8,550 points, sitting comfortably ahead of France's Felix Lebrun, who holds 6,659 points.

Japanese compatriot Tomokazu Harimoto occupies third place with 6,363 points, followed by Sweden's Truls Moregard with 6,180 points and China's Wang Chuqin with 6,157 points.

Matsushima is the first Japanese player to top the men's singles rankings since Seiji Ono in July 1980. He also ends an era of Chinese dominance, becoming the first non-Chinese player to hold the position since Germany's Dimitrij Ovtcharov in 2018.

He is also the youngest male singles player to ever top the rankings, surpassing the previous mark set by Lin Shidong. Matsushima reached this milestone at the age of 19, following rapid progress from youth competitions to the professional stage.

The China Smash played a decisive role in Matsushima's current position. Although projections placed him at number one earlier in the month, he needed the tournament's final results to confirm his final ranking. When Felix Lebrun and Moregard were eliminated in the quarterfinals, and Harimoto bowed out in the Round of 16, Matsushima's position at the top was secured even before the tournament ended.

He capped off the event with the men's singles title after defeating Taiwan's Lin Yun-ju 4–3 in the final.

Matsushima previously captured titles at the 2026 United States Smash and the 2025 WTT Champions Frankfurt. He also made the semifinals at the Europe Smash, WTT Champions Yokohama and WTT Champions Chongqing, alongside quarterfinal appearances in Doha and Macau.

Earlier this year at the 2026 World Cup in Macau, Matsushima reached the men's singles final, becoming only the second Japanese player to achieve the feat. In the title match against Wang Chuqin, he led 3–2 before narrowly losing 3–4. Despite settling for silver, his performance proved he was capable of going toe-to-toe with China's top players.

In team events, Matsushima helped Japan secure a silver medal at the World Championships in London earlier in 2026, and he played a pivotal role in the men's team's victory over China to claim the gold medal at the Asian Games on home soil.

Matsushima's rapid rise occurred when Wang was absent from several recent tournaments due to injury. While the Chinese star remains a formidable rival, his inability to compete in a full schedule cost him the chance to accumulate ranking points. The men's circuit now features fierce competition, with Matsushima, Lebrun, Harimoto, Moregard and Lin Yun-ju in the mix.

After sweeping all 10 titles in the two previous editions of the China Smash, the host nation retained only the two women's event championships this year, with the men's and mixed doubles crowns going to international participants.
